Technologies
There are two main types of satellite internet:
geostationary and low earth orbit. Geostationary satellites are located 22,000 miles above the equator and are used by traditional satellite internet providers, such as Hughesnet and Viasat.
However Starlinks low earth orbit satellites are much closer to earth about 500 miles in altitude.
The low orbit Starlink satellites offer low Latency(latency is the time it takes for a signal to travel from the user to the server and back).
In our experience we are seeing latency of 30-40 milliseconds with starlink compared to 600-700 milliseconds with traditional satellites. This low latency is the biggest difference when it come to the responsiveness and quality of online activities. Video calls, Gaming, and steaming all perform better with low latency. Starlinks download speeds are higher 100mbp to 300mbp and uploads between 15mbp to 20mbp.
